Module 1: Mythology
~Our first quarter will focus on Mythology and how Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey Narrative shapes many modern day stories. We will also be reading Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. Students will finish this module by writing their own Hero's Journey Narrative.

Module 2: Voices in Adversity
~During our second module, students will study forms of poetry called monologues and concrete poems. Using the collection of monologues known as Good Masters! Sweet Ladies!, students will break down how adversities are conveyed through voices both from the Middle Ages and Modern Times. Students will finish this module by creating their own Monologue or Concrete Poem to present to their peers.

Module 3: Sustaining the Oceans
~In Module 3, students will research information on the affects of overfishing on the oceans, while reading the book, Flush by Carl Hiaasen. Students will also read the non-fiction text, World Without Fish. Students will complete this unit by creating a guide to purchasing sustainable fish.

Module 4: Insecticides: Costs vs Benefits
~In Module 4, students will research the benefits, as well as the harmful consequences of using DDT on the environment. Students will also read the book, Frightful's Mountain, to determine the effects of DDT on the characters within the book. Students will create a Cascading Chart on the Harmful or Beneficial aspects of DDT on the environment for their final project.

Grammar Workshop
Each week, students will work on different aspects of improving their grammar skills. Everyday, the students receive a different grade appropriate word, that they need to define and learn. On Mondays, students take a very short vocabulary quiz over the words from the previous week.
